Elmhurst’s Louisiana Shrimp Boil Set for July 28
The spacious grounds of Elmhurst, The House of Friendship assisted living residence in Wheeling will rock with a down-home, southern vibe at the second annual Louisiana-style Shrimp Boil on the Lawn fundraiser, Saturday, July 28.
The mouth-watering aroma of a traditional southern shrimp boil simmering in a large kettle, will greet attendees who will dine under tents on the front lawn of the former Samuel S. Bloch estate on National Road.
“Our initial Shrimp Boil fundraiser last year generated a great support from folks who kicked-back and enjoyed summer’s best party,” recalls Elmhurst Executive Director Jamie Crow. “People are already buzzing about enjoying another fantastic evening with great food and super music from this year’s band, Brother Randall and Friends,” Crow said.
The Shrimp Boil is presented by the Friends of Elmhurst and hosted once again by Mike and Sarah Barickman. Mike Barickman is president of the Elmhurst board of directors.
Elmhurst is a non-profit that has been serving seniors’ housing needs for the past 128 years, Crow points out, noting, “The Shrimp Boil is our major fundraiser for Elmhurst, a place where seniors enjoy the very best in assisted living at a price that is exceptionally affordable. Maintaining our mission in the community for our older residents, and preserving the historic Bloch home, has been our goal since 1890.”

Elmhurst Chef Mike Travis will dish up a traditional Louisiana shrimp-boil menu featuring shrimp, sausage, corn on the cob, potatoes, cole slaw, and cornbread, served family-style on each tabletop. Diners may select from two surprise ice cream flavors created by Kirke’s Homemade Ice Cream to top off dinner.
An open bar will be available with a variety of beer and craft beers. A specialty drink concocted for the event known as the Mason-Dixon will be a combination of sweet tea, lemonade, and vodka, Crow said.
Brother Randall and Friends is a local six-piece band specializing in blue grass and blue grass gospel music. They perform frequently at the Pennyroyal Opera House in Fairview, OH and other venues throughout the Ohio Valley.
